2009
1. On July 16th, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary, Steven Chu, has announced the selection of 28 new wind energy projects. V&R is one of the companies receiving funding.
V&R, in cooperation with NRECA CRN, Tri-State G&T and AECI, was awarded a DOE project "Improving Reliability of Transmission Grid to Facilitate Integration of Wind Energy in Tri-State G&T and AECI". The analyses under the awarded project will be performed using POM Suite of Applications.

2. On July 26th through 29th, 2009 we participated in the 2009 PES General Meeting in Calgary, Canada.
V&R hosted a hospitality suite in Hyatt Regency Calgary.
We demonstrated POM Suite, version 5 and its applications for:
- Use of PMU measurements to predict voltage collapse
- Quick prediction of cascading outages
- N-1-1, N-2 and above automatic AC contingency analysis and visualization
- Fast fault screening for three-phase and unbalanced faults
- Dynamic security region
- Fast and accurate prediction of operating limits
- Performing corrective actions to mitigate the exceeding operating limits
3. POM Suite version 5 is scheduled to be released in August of 2009.
This version will be approximately three times faster than the current version. The program is designed such that it automates NERC-compliance studies. It also addresses the upcoming NERC TPL standards to assess system performance following Planning Events and Extreme Events.

4. V&R made a major breakthrough in the area of voltage stability assessment. The solution that V&R offers becomes especially important when PV-curve analysis does not yield useful results. As a result, POM Suite identifies “operating” voltage stability margin, and effectively alleviates voltage instability using existing reactive and real sources in the system, as well as increases the transfer capability along the critical interfaces.
5. On-site training in POM Suite was held at American Transmission Co., Waukesha, WI on June 30 – July 1, 2009.
6. V&R was awarded a CEATI ( www.ceati.com ) project “Prediction of Power System Instability Based on PMU: Utilizing the ROSE (Region of Stability Existence) Approach.” ISO New England is the host utility for the project. The project started in May 2009.
Please click here to learn more about this and other POM-related projects.
