V&R Energy: Transient Stability (POM-TS) - Powerful Dynamic Simulation Tool
POM - Transient Stability (POM-TS) is a fast and comprehensive dynamic simulation tool – its execution time for a one second simulation is approximately 6 seconds for a 50,000-bus case and 17,000 dynamic models.
Fully integrated into POM Suite, POM-TS is designed to determine the transient stability limits after any disturbance is applied to a power system network of any practical dimensions. POM-TS allows the user to compute transient stability limits during massive contingency
analysis. The contingency analysis results may be then checked against planning and/or operational criteria such as the value of a voltage dip after fault clearing, duration of a voltage dip, post-transient voltage deviation, and frequency deviation.
All the functions of POM-TS are directly accessible from the main POM application interface. The users have an ability to switch between the dynamic and steady-state functions without any restrictions. Both dynamic and steady-state parameters are listed in the interface. Any system quantities may be selected as an output and can be displayed graphically. POM-TS simulates short-term, mid-term, and long-term stability events. The application uses variable time step techniques without loss in accuracy of results.
POM-TS offers the capability to simulate balanced and unbalanced faults:
- Three-phase, double line-to-ground, line-to-ground, line-to-line faults may be simulated.
- Critical clearing time is easily determined depending on fault locations.
- Simultaneous events at multiple buses or points along a transmission line may be simulated.
- Any sequence of switching events may be specified within the same Operation (i.e., within the same simulation run).
POM-TS works in both interactive and automatic modes. It allows its users to perform the massive fault analysis using conventional time-domain simulation, while monitoring the various performance criteria. POM-TS performs error checking in a powerfully useful way. If any data is seen as incorrect, that is documented. If POM-TS corrects the data, that is also documented.
POM-TS delivers the reliability and speed while providing a user-friendly, easy-to-use transient stability analysis tool for both planning and operations environments.
Fast Fault Screening (FFS) Capability
POM-TS features a unique capability to automatically identify the most dangerous fault locations out of all possible faults in the system, and perform the ranking of those faults in on-line and off-line environments. That featuire is called Fast Fault Screening (FFS).
Dynamic Security Region
When the simultaneous transfers are being modeled, POM-TS offers capability to compute the Dynamic Security Region using BOR-TS application. POM Suite characterizes the security of a power system in terms of the power injections (load demand and generation).
The system is considered to be secure under such operating conditions (such sets of injections) when no steady-state or transient stability constraints are being violated. That is defined as the Dynamic Security Region of a power system.
Dynamic models
POM-TS supports the library of dynamic models in GE’s PSLF and Siemens PTI’s PSS/E formats. It allows for an easy inclusion of the user-defined models using POM scripting features without the need for any external compilers.
POM-TS Output
The graphical capabilities of POM-TS include:
- Easy plotting of various electrical parameters versus time
- POM-TS allows the user to plot more than one parameter versus time within the same plot
- Ability to easily save the plots in a wide variety of graphics formats.
- Visualization of the process on a geographical map (natively integrated with Google Maps)
Tabular output of POM-TS includes:
- Database output
- Easy and simple exporting of data to Microsoft Excel
Performance Criteria

POM-TS has the capability to simultaneously monitor multiple criteria during the massive fault analysis, such as:
- Rotor angle
- Damping
- Voltage dip
- Frequency
